Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has been dealing with an increase in fires caused by lithium-ion batteries, especially in e-bikes and e-scooters.
In response, the service has launched the ‘Charge Safely, Sleep Soundly’ campaign, aimed at promoting safer charging, storage, and battery disposal practices.
Lithium-ion batteries are found in mobile phones, laptops, e-scooters, e-bikes and e-cigarettes. They are safe during normal use, but present a fire risk when over-charged, short-circuited, submerged in water or damaged and can be extremely dangerous when thrown away with general rubbish, or mixed with recyclable materials like card, metal and plastic.
Lithium batteries are sensitive to high temperatures and flammable. If you use rechargeable bikes, scooters, motorbikes or mobility scooters, you’re asked to follow this safety advice:
- Charge your devices and equipment during the day, instead of at night
- Unplug after charging and only use manufacturer-approved chargers
- Avoid charging on soft, flammable surfaces, like bedding.
- If a battery shows signs of overheating, swelling or other forms of damage, do not use it
- Always seek professional guidance when converting a bike or scooter into an e-bike or e-scooter
- Only purchase charging equipment from a trusted seller.
