Criminals are exploiting the cold weather, sending fraudulent texts on winter fuel payments to people in Somerset.
The messages encourage people to click on unsafe links to register for, or claim, fuel allowance.
However, clicking the link opens the door for fraudsters to steal personal and financial data they use to commit identity fraud and take money.
Claire Bounds, Fraud Protection Officer at Avon and Somerset Police, says even clicking the link without entering any information can download malicious software onto your device.
She says a spate of the texts has been circulating and that it’s important for people to understand the best course of action to take when targeted.
They say if you receive any unsolicited content you should:
- Stop! Think Fraud, and don’t click on any links
- Take your time to read any unexpected messages. There are often signs to indicate fraud, such as spelling and grammar errors or strange use of language
- If you have become a victim and lost money notify your bank immediately.
