Avon and Somerset Police, in collaboration with Somerset’s Domestic Abuse Service and Somerset Council, have launched a new initiative to improve the support given to domestic abuse victims.
‘Operation Balearic’ aims to provide immediate safeguarding support during a victim’s most vulnerable moments, whilst also strengthening investigative outcomes against perpetrators.
The initiative involves police officers visiting victims within 24 hours of a suspect’s arrest. Accompanied by an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor, victims are offered specialist advocacy and support, allowing them an opportunity to disclose information and receive safeguarding assistance.
Detective Inspector Matt Cable, from Avon and Somerset Police’s sexual investigations team, says that through working with partners, the Police can provide potentially lifesaving support, including emergency accommodation, safety plans, and wellbeing services, while at the same time empowering victims to share their information to build stronger cases against perpetrators. He says no one should live in fear of abuse or violence, and that the Police will always ensure that victims are never left alone.
To get help, you should call the Somerset Domestic Abuse Service’s 24-hour support line on 0800 694 9999.
