Local Elections May 5th

People in Somerset go to the polls on Thursday, May 5th, to decide who will govern them at a local level until 2027.

Somerset's five existing councils will cease to exist in April next year, with a new unitary authority, which will be called Somerset Council taking over all responsibilities for providing local council services across the County from April 2023. 

On Thursday, May 5th people will be voting to elect 110 representatives to oversee the collapse of the five existing councils and the transition to the new Somerset Council, and then to run the new Somerset Council for four years after that.

There are a total of 337 candidates standing in the local elections;

The Conservatives are fielding 109 candidates across all 55 divisions.

The Liberal Democrats are fielding 108 candidates.

The Green Party has 50 candidates standing. 

Labour has 45 candidates standing. 

23 candidates are standing as independents or with no affiliation or description.
