A new High Sheriff has been appointed to the role in Somerset.
Janet Montgomery replaces Rob Beckley following the completion of his one-year term of office.
The High Sheriff is an independent, non-political role appointed by the monarchy, serving as the King's representative in the county on matters of law and order. In the role, Janet will focus on supporting charities and organisations which:
• Create opportunities for children and young people that are designed to build self-confidence and personal skills
• Mentor children and young people by helping them to identify their interests and passions
• Work to prevent vulnerable children and young people from becoming involved in risk-taking behaviour and exploitation
Janet Montgomery was born and bred in Somerset and is a qualified chartered surveyor and town planner. Alongside her professional career, she has contributed to a variety of local good causes, acting as trustee to charities with a focus on health, sport and education.
With experience in education as a school governor, Janet says she understands the issues facing children and young people and appreciates the huge value that education and extracurricular activities play in helping to divert them away from antisocial activities and crime.
As High Sheriff, she says she’s looking forward to connecting with community groups, learning about their activities, and exploring ways to support their invaluable efforts.
