    Proposed strike action by waste collection crews in the county has been called off. Members of the Unite union were presented with an improved pay offer from contractor Suez. Union members had planned to walk out on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays over a period of a month. They have accepted a 9 per cent pay rise. 

    A Chard clothes shop is closing next month. New Look has confirmed the store on Holyrood Street will shut its doors on August 9th. The clothing chain was originally founded in Taunton in 1969.

    Meanwhile, a sewing studio is due to open in Ilminster town centre in August. Sew What will be based on Silver Street, providing classes and drop-in sessions. The owner, Sam Evers, promises the facility will be suitable for beginners and experienced sewers alike.

    And a Yeovil man is cycling the length of Britain this summer in memory of his father, who died of prostate cancer. David Parish is riding from Land’s End to John O’Groats with two friends, raising money for two cancer charities alongside ‘School In A Bag’. The challenge begins on Friday.
