    The public is being asked for its views on how the Hinkley Point B nuclear power station near Bridgwater should be decommissioned. Owners, EDF Energy, has applied to the Office for Nuclear Regulation for formal permission to decommission the site that ceased operations in 2022. People have 3-months in which to give their views, with the decommissioning process due to start in the summer of 2025.

    The A303 at the Southfields roundabout on the Ilminster by-pass will close overnight for essential maintenance. The work takes place tonight from 8 pm to 6 am tomorrow and for the next four nights. Drivers travelling between these times are advised to plan their journeys, with a diversion in operation on the A358.

    A Somerset animal charity says it’s struggling to cope with the number of older dogs being put up for adoption. Rushton Dog Rescue near Langport says rising vets bills are also putting the squeeze on the charity's purse strings. 

    The number of reported rape cases to Avon and Somerset Police in the last 12 months increased to just over 3,000, according to the national crime survey. The increase places Avon and Somerset at the top of a list of English police areas per thousand of population for reported rape cases. 

    A Yeovil business has been presented with the King's Award for Enterprise. Atlantas Marine, which designs and manufactures underwater inspection cameras and equipment, was given the award for its rapid growth in overseas earnings.

    Police are appealing for witnesses to a single-vehicle collision involving a blue Ford Fiesta and a tree at the junction of the A30 with the B3167 Roman Road near Cricket St Thomas. The crash happened at around 11 pm on Saturday, August 31st. The vehicle was being driven towards Chard at the time of the collision.     Asda in Yeovil is inviting donations of used children’s books as part of the supermarket's partnership with the Children's Book Project. The Children's Book Project aims to tackle book poverty in childhood by gifting surplus new and pre-loved books to children with limited access to books.
