People in Somerset are calling on the government to think again about the expansion of new solar farms across the county. The government wants to be a ‘clean energy superpower’ but residents are concerned that farmland will be lost.

A well-loved Yeovil taxi driver is being mourned in the town, following his death at 54 years old. Norel Scortea was originally from Bucharest but had made South Somerset his home. A collection is being made in his name and anyone who wishes to remember him should contact his employer, Radio Cabs.

Four days on from the fire that ‘significantly’ damaged Yeovil’s Dunelm store, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service have told us they believe the fire was started by a discarded cigarette outside the premises. Meanwhile, Dunelm has confirmed that they will be redeploying staff from the site throughout the wider company whilst the doors remain closed.

Essential road closures will affect the A37 between Barwick and Stoford next week. Night-time road closures will be in place from Monday 2nd to Friday 6th September as Somerset Council’s Highways team resurfaces the Keyford roundabout. Access between 6 pm and 7.30 am will be maintained for residents, businesses and emergency services.

Belly dancing, samba music and an organ grinder are just a handful of attractions in Crewkerne town centre from Friday next week, as the summer fair and market returns. Organisers, the Rotary Club of Crewkerne District, say there will be funfair rides and thirty stalls to browse at the annual event that dates back to Anglo-Saxon times.
