A superb first half showing from Yeovil Town secured a third win on the bounce with a 2-0 victory over Southend United.
Goals from Reuben Reid and Tom Knowles within the first ten minutes built a comfortable advantage in the early stages.
It could’ve been more for the Glovers, but 2-0 was how it remained, with Yeovil leapfrogging Southend.
Darren Sarll made just one change to the side which beat Bromley. Josh Staunton was handed a well-earned rest with captain Luke Wilkinson returning to the fold.
It was a phenomenal start from the Glovers, who blew the visitors away in the opening ten minutes. With just three minutes on the clock, Town gave fans a glimpse of what was to come with Charlie Wakefield gliding in behind, but he was unable to find his marker.
With the match in tribute to our captain, Lee Collins, it was written in the stars that Yeovil would score in the fourth minute. Reid grabbed his second goal of the season, beating his marker to the ball following Lawson D’Ath’s cross and poking the ball home beyond Steve Arnold.
Less than five minutes later, Knowles added Town’s second. D’Ath’s quick throw-in found Wakefield whose pass gave Knowles the easy task of tapping the ball home.
After a rocky start, the Shrimpers did enjoy spells of possession, but similarly to Tuesday’s victory over Bromley, he remained untested throughout the first half.
In the closing stages of the half, Town should’ve added a third. A brilliant pass from Reid released Knowles who saw his effort headed off the line.
The second half brought more of the same for Yeovil Town, with a number of chances in the opening stages of the half.
Within two minutes, Wilkinson’s flick-on was almost met by Reid, but a heroic block denied an almost certain goal.
Moments later, a long ball was headed clear by Southend, but with Arnold in no man's land, the ball dropped to Wakefield who saw his first-time effort fly wide of the empty net.
As the half grew on, Southend looked to grow into the game but did little to test Ted Cann. They were often limited to long shots with former Yeovil trials Callum Powell firing an effort well over the bar.
In the closing stages, the best chances of the half fell to substitute Alex Bradley, who saw his 1v1 effort saved by Steve Arnold.
As the full-time whistle blew, it was a thoroughly deserved victory for the Glovers who now look to extend their run in North West London against Barnet.
